The Virgen de Guadalupe Apperances
The mural "The Virgin of Guadalupe Appearances" is located on the first floor of "El Mercado" and was created by muralist Jorge Rodriguez in April 2009. The mural mostly tells the story of the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe with the indigenous Juan Diego, with each rose depicting a different scene. The work also includes iconic characters such as the leader of Mexico's independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who during the freedom struggle depicted the Virgin of Guadalupe as a symbol on a flag.
The mural also highlights Pope John Paul II who during his time as head of the Catholic Church was a great follower of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The rosary, another iconic symbol of the Catholic faith, is captured in the mural, something that according to Rodriguez is significant on a universal level. This work of art also depicts Saint Toribio Romo, who for decades has been venerated by Mexican immigrants who leave their hometowns in search of the American dream.
According to the artist, the mural was created with the purpose that the general public could visit this area of the mall and make a religious petition. Finally, this artwork includes a prayer to help guide the visitor in their spiritual encounter. Through this mural, the artist hopes to convey a message of hope. The artwork is created with tri-ply wood and acrylic paint and has a protective sealant.
