La Gran Biblioteca will open as the Fort Worth Public Library's first retail location in La Gran Plaza de Fort Worth.

FEBRUARY 18, 2022 (Fort Worth, TX) —The community is invited to join the Fort Worth Public Library in celebrating the opening of its new location inside La Gran Plaza de Fort Worth at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 4200 South Freeway, Fort Worth, TX.

La Gran Biblioteca is located on the second level of La Gran Plaza Mall, next to the main entrance of "El Mercado", at suite #1338. This new library is a relocation of the former Seminary South branch.

The celebration will begin with a performance by Mariachi El Mexicanismiso de La Gran Plaza at 10:15 a.m., followed by remarks from community leaders and a ribbon cutting ceremony. There will be special activities and free giveaways at the new library while supplies last, including 500 new books donated by EECU Credit Union.  Community partners such as the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, EECU and the Panther City Lacrosse Club will join in the day's festivities.

The new library will offer services and programming similar to other Fort Worth Public Library locations, including a variety of books in Spanish and English, media for all ages, public computers, story hours and activities.  Although La Gran Biblioteca itself is just under three thousand square feet, there is space within La Gran Plaza to hold great programs and events, and it is a unique opportunity to reach more people within the community.

"We are excited about what the move to La Gran Plaza will mean for the library and the community," said Branch Manager Ariel Corral.  "Being in La Gran Plaza will give us many opportunities to take advantage of existing foot traffic and convert them into regular library users.  The shared spaces in La Gran Plaza will give us the opportunity to do more and bigger programs as well."

La Gran Biblioteca has been years in the making.  The project is in keeping with the library's facility master plan to provide services to the community outside of the traditional branches.  The process of building a new facility from scratch takes several years of planning, financing through a bond election, design and construction.  The initial cost is much higher than operating within an existing structure.

"By locating into La Gran Plaza, the more than 80,000 annual visitors we host at Seminary South will now be able to experience the vibrant culture found within La Gran Plaza when they come to visit," said Manya Shorr, interim deputy city manager.  "It's a win/win for the library and the merchant and is an example of the innovative approach to venue expansion that Fort Worth needs."

The former Seminary South library location will get a new life later this year as the new home of the Fort Worth Public Library's Genealogy, Local History and Archives unit.  Its move from downtown will provide easier access for those conducting family or historical research.
